Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Alexander Technique provides a process for becoming mindful of how you’re using your body and creating new possibilities and changes that allow supportive habits of movement and posture to emerge. The Alexander Technique teaches you how to move with less strain, force, or pain, and more ease, connectivity, and flow.

    This process includes:

    • building awareness

    • learning and discovering new ways to move and be in your body

    • increasing embodied anatomical and functional knowledge

    • the application of this learning into your daily life’s activities

  • Sessions include hands-on guidance and feedback that facilitate building awareness around your habitual movement patterns, coordination, and overall understanding of how you move. Hands-on work also guides you to explore changing tone and tension in your body to find easier ways of moving that result in less stress and strain in the body. This work happens collaboratively and with your consent to work with touch.

In sessions we typically work sitting, standing, and walking. These basic everyday movements reveal most of our movement patterns and are a great foundational place to start. Depending on your interests we will also apply the Alexander Technique process to specific activities that you want help with such as typing at the computer, playing an instrument, speaking, recreational activities, etc., so that you understand how to continue the work outside of sessions and integrate it.

Sessions also include table work which allows clients the space to integrate the work from the session. Table work allows clients to experience changes in tone, support, and balance on a deep level throughout their whole body while not weight bearing. Table work is done with a client lying face up on a massage table, fully clothed, receiving hands-on work.

  • 4-6 Sessions will give you a solid foundation of the Alexander Technique process. Clients begin to experience changes in these first few sessions and gain a beginning understanding of how to use the work outside the sessions on their own.

6-10 Sessions will more deeply address the underlying movement patterns that can cause repetitive strain, tension, and injury. Clients begin to feel empowered by the work as it becomes integrated into their daily lives.

10+ The work of self-discovery and creating lasting change takes practice! Many clients return to private sessions to maintain their progress, continue refining their understanding, and continue to work with the daily changes that we navigate with our bodies in life.

  • If you’re looking to build momentum with what you learn and discover in sessions, it’s best to start with weekly or bi-weekly sessions. With this regularity the changes we work on will integrate and “stick” as you practice them in each session and on your own.

After the initial impact of 10-12 sessions some students continue this regularity. Others shift to a more infrequent schedule and come in once every few weeks to check in, maintain their progress, and address new issues that arise in between sessions.

  • This answer is unique to each person. Beginning to pay attention to one’s body, one’s self, and how we’re attending to that connection in a conscious way begins differently with each person.

Clients typically experience changes and relief in a single session. This process deepens and accumulates with each subsequent session.

Clients often have “aha” moments in their first session when they notice something new about how they’ve been moving or using their bodies. These “aha” moments empower clients with knowledge and awareness to address patterns of pain or imbalance in the body. Clients also express experiencing a sense of renewed balance, state of calm, groundedness, and ease.

  • Before your first or next session, consider what you'd like to address and work on together.

Wear clothes you feel comfortable moving in. Pants, shorts, and shirts with sleeves are preferred. There is space at all studios to change your clothes if needed.
